Beautiful Untranslatable

Beautiful & Untranslatable: Words from Around the World

While English increases in popularity, there are words and phrases commonly found in various other languages that will never be directly translatable. We’re here to celebrate these beautiful, strange, and often elaborate expressions that hold importance to their respective cultures.

The Greek language is Europe’s oldest language, which still remains alive today. Existing for more than four thousand years, and incredibly rich, it boasts more than five million words and seventy million word types. So, with such an old language and so many words – there is no wonder that many Greek words are untranslatable. While many words are untranslatable, we do our best to interpret their meaning.

Meraki is a word used to describe doing something with creativity, passion, or love — to pour yourself into your work, heart, and soul. Think about the writers you love, the artists you feel a connection with. What makes their work so powerful is that the part of their personality they impart in their work.

Meraki is a concept, a philosophy that you can apply to the most everyday actions. Find a job you can do with meraki and you will never work a day in your life!

It is a blessing and gift to find passion, reward, and love in what we do and how we spend our time. We have found meraki in our own work at the Language Department – and hope you can find it in yours.
