Beautiful & Untranslatable: Words From Around the World

While English increases in popularity, there are words and phrases commonly found in various other languages that will never be directly translatable. We’re here to celebrate these beautiful, strange, and often elaborate expressions that hold importance to their respective cultures.

The German language is one with a rich history. Mainly spoken in Central Europe, it is the most commonly used and the official language for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, South Tyrol, Belgium, and Liechtenstein. German is the 11th most widely spoken language around the world today, boasting nearly 1.5% of the population of the planet as being speakers of the language.

German has often been referred to as the language of the ‘Dichter und Denker,’ or of the writers and thinkers. Coupling this concept with the beautiful, often mysterious forests of Germany that leave room for the mind to wander and restore itself, it’s no wonder why they have they use the word Waldeinsamkeit. While technically an untranslatable word, Waldeinsamkeit roughly means “the feeling of being alone in the woods” or “the feeling of pure solitude in the woods.” No matter which indirect translation you choose, the meaning is understood and cherished far and wide to German speakers.
